Marty was unable to make Week 10 because Mike Rowe was cleaning out his equipment bag for a segment on “The World’s Dirtiest Jobs”. Mike Dougherty’s son, Dan, took his place and played for Blue. Red was all smiles, thinking they’d wear him down quicker than a stump grinder on a dandelion. Dan thought not. The game was deadlocked at zeroes for the first half hour and then Red lit the lamp at the 6:25 mark with John Lupisella assisting Larry Johnson. Blue struck back with Greg Wright and Mark Herr getting the drop on Vinnie stickside (the pass was his; the shot Herr’s) and Joe Peugot made it 2-1 with a goal that smelt of ripe garbage. At 3-1 controversy broke out when Brian Urban denied Red an almost certain score by falling on the puck in the crease. Red demanded a penalty shot but Blue laughed them to scorn (as if Blue would ever let a slavish conformity to the rulebook stand in the way of victory). From that point on Blue dominated, their will to win boosted to a fever pitch by Kevin Saunders, whose personal vendetta against Red became violent at times, especially when he crosschecked Kenny in the back and then instigated a brief tussle with Eddie that some mistook for a spasm of mutual affection. Even so Vinnie was excellent in goal, but he was like a hot pitcher undone by inept fielding and no run support. The victory laurel went to Dan hands down, and if anyone uttered the words “Marty who?” in the locker room after the game, it was only to amplify their appreciation for a debut well done.
