Week 23 coincided with Oscar night and, presumably due to a team-wide affinity for high fashion and red carpet pomp, Blue took to the pre-game warm-up with a decidedly understaffed roster. Brian Urban and Rich Devlin convened with Red manager Kenny Blankstein and proposed a number of roster moves in an attempt to even the benches. With Ken growing more and more incredulous with Blue’s suggestions (“Fine, Fine….just give us Bobby Freiling and Little Millen and we’ll call it fair”), he broke down and offered up Tim White. Tim, who had be sitting within earshot and was eagerly waiting to start the game, lowered his head and shuffled into the Red locker room to reluctantly change his attire. Timmy emerged with a jersey so tight-fitting that one had to assume that he had been properly winterized, wrapped, and was being lifted to the upper rack to wait out the winter at the marina. Not since the heyday of the Shrinky-Dink have we seen a material stretched to such a capacity.
Buoyed by the acquisition of a top end talent like White, Blue started the contest with all of the scoring opportunities and the majority of the offensive zone time. After giving up two early Blue goals to Rich Devlin and Nick Gaudioso, Vinny Bauerle settled into his rhythm and responded by staying with Brian Urban as he cut around his defender and attempted to beat Vin to the far post. He continued to look sharp and hold his angles as he subsequently sent Dave Bassert away frustrated with a thwarted breakaway attempt. Bobby Freiling Jr took advantage of the momentum gained by Vinny’s timely saves and inserted Red into the game with two goals including a broken play off the end boards and a low shot from the right circle. John Lupisella had a golden opportunity to keep the chains moving for Red when he picked up a loose puck inside the blue line and, keenly sensing the fact that the Blue defense was closing in on him, teed up the puck for shot from 25 feet in front of Blue goaltender Marty Urban. Marty braced himself as John wound up a backscratcher of a slap shot before whiffing entirely and toppling into a snowy, Sabres-clad heap of shame.
Red would never see a lead in the evening’s tilt as Blue drew upon additional goals from the Bassert brothers and one more from Devlin (seen below cheering on Kevin Saunders at an undisclosed bar in Manhattan’s East Village). The Red scoring was left entirely to two members who need to sneak into R rated movies and still put out cookies and milk on Christmas Eve “just in case”. The fledgling goal scoring duo of Freiling Jr and Jason Millen did all the heavy lifting and doggedly dragged Red into a 5-5 tie in the last minutes of the game. With time about to expire and the Zamboni gate about to be lifted, poetic justice was delivered with a swift and crushing blow when the aforementioned Tim White bullied himself past the Red defense and outwaited Vinny before scoring on the final shot of the evening to deliver a 6-5 victory for Blue.
In response to the current social debate and impending legislature, gun ownership returned to the after-party discussions as the Old Bucks race to arms moves ahead with a full head of steam. Before President Obama and his gang of sandal-footed hippie thugs kick down your doors and take away your right to arms (and assuredly, forks and knives), many within the organization are scrambling to stockpile any means to defend themselves from liberals, illegal aliens, zombies, and other likeminded ne’er-do-wells. Hugh DeHaven even debuted a gorgeous pair of custom tasseled loafers that comfortably contain a single shot Deringer within the EZ-Lift heel. With the swelling tide of bravado rushing throughout the comfortably heated confines of the TJ’s dining room, it will be interesting to see if our freedom fighters can honor tradition and sit in the elements for the last post-game outing of the season. I call dibs on sharing Rich’s heiny warmer.
Week 23 Three Stars
3- Tim White – Handled his trade like a pro, dutifully painted on a blue jersey, and proceeded to win the game. What a champion.
2- Vinny Bauerle – Did more than enough to give his team a chance to win, made a number to stick-tap worthy saves and was a huge reason this game ended up only 6-5……
1 –Marty Urban – But of course Marty is the other reason and we have to give the highest honor to the winning goaltender. Marty was rarely shaken up, and from all accounts, a true gentleman with his defensemen.
