WEEK 17 COURTESY OF AN UNEXPURGATED EMAIL FROM PAUL EGAN
The game last week had deep benches, thanks to the holiday homecomings from the college young-uns. The eventual score (not exactly sure) is misleading - the game was fairly well balanced except for the scoring bits. Red eventually tallied an 8-0 lead before Blue potted one. Kenny G was in the net for Blue and he played admirably - it’s just that 3 Herr kids not named Cheeky set the pace for Red, ditto Jason Millen and Bob Freiling Jr. It’s worth noting that Ken had the unmitigated gall to take the 3 young Herrs for Red, dispensing the patriarch to Blue. Not really a Sophie’s choice for him.
Blue did have both Bassert boys, who played with typical insular approach - which is to say with talent but communication that is theirs alone. Andrew being persnickety and Dave being stuck between Bassert loyalty and Blue bench normality, I think they both potted one. Brian Urban skated for Blue, ditto young Dan and his bearded friend Chris, so it’s not like Blue didn’t have plenty of fire power.
The star of the game was Vinnie for Red. He stood on his head the entire game and made restaurant quality saves. It was probably the fastest paced game I’ve witnessed @ OB, it flew by. Final score was something like 12-3.
Big group at TJ’s - 3 reg pies and a Brooklyn. I believe that’s a high water mark.
