Sunday night was the year end party at Nick’s house, La Casa Gaudioso. It was also the first ever Old Bucks party with limited in-person attendance—the attendance limited to those who said they could go. We were excited to be one of the lucky few. Especially given our tendency to sit alone in a dark room and ponder once inconceivable thoughts—thoughts like Krysten Jenner, who can’t even tow a boat without causing a fatality, being the last, best hope of California. Our better half could not make it but still urged us to trim our nose hairs, put on deodorant, nix the black socks and shorts, don’t drink and drive, and above all else, bring home her ceramic dish.
We’ve never been to Italy but once at Nick’s house there’s no need to go. It’s as pleasant as an evening on Lake Como, as refreshing as a hike in the Apennines, as memorable as an audience with the Pope. So many memories too of past parties at Nick’s! Like the time Kip Thomas and Mark Egner showed up, or the time Angie gave the awards speech in front of the Rangers-Penguins playoff game, or the time Garrett Heffern ran across the pool cover thinking it was a canvas version of terra firma. The point is: everyone’s Italian once they’ve arrived, even Paul Egan, who reminded us of Aldo Cello: he is not tall, he is not pretty, he is not a slave to fashion, but Aldo Cello knows what a party likes—fine wine! Chill a Cello!
This gathering ranked right up there with the best—a time to let down your hair, let down your mask, and let down your guard so Hughie could land one of his jokes. Hughie, by the way, got his hair cut for the occasion. A friend of his did it, a friend who happened to be a cosmetician for an undertaker. “Good job on the front,” Hughie told him, “but how’s the back look?” The friend said, “Nobody ever looks at the back.”
Rather than describe the party we thought we’d unveil the first ever “Old Bucks Year End Party Music Video”. Here it is:
