Week 20 was Super Bowl Sunday, usually a busy night for Old Bucks, but with the Saints playing the Colts, even more so. Players we haven’t seen in a while were there like Bill Hamill, Dave Hunt, and all three Thomases—Kip, Steve, and Kyle. Saunders, we were told, was at a gay Super Bowl party, and Rich Devlin, we were also told, was taking photographs in the locker room before the game. Somehow the two seem related, but we won’t go there.
We’re not going to give any inventory of goals, except to say that Kip Thomas scored off a pass from Mike Dougherty to tie the game at two’s. Kip hadn’t scored in forever so we think we owe it to him. But with Red winning 4-3 disaster struck. John Lupisella, for Red, took a slap shot from the blue line that skimmed along the ice and caught Marty betwixt and betweens, uncertain whether to stand up or fall down. The result was a popped groin muscle and a slow walk back to the locker room. Play was suspended for five minutes as Blue was wary of giving battle without their goalie, but Rich Cerbone volunteered to play with just his regular pads on. He did use Marty’s goalie stick, however, which was useful considering he had smashed his over the cross bar when Red scored their fourth goal. But from then on the game was a scrimmage and those who had Super Bowl events to attend cut out early.
As of Wednesday we hear Marty’s “still swollen and sore but doing better”. He’s tentatively scheduled to come back in two weeks with Jamie taking his place for Week 21.
On this day (2007): Kenny, still unfamiliar with the subtle nuances of team-picking etiquette, goads Kip Thomas into skating with Red. Kip reluctantly does so but refuses a seat on the Red bench, instead playing out of the penalty box to avoid contamination as much as possible. Asked if he plans to skate with Red again, he replies, “I’d walk barefoot to India first.”
