Turnout was light for Week 23 with game time coinciding with the third period of the U.S./Canada gold medal game in Vancouver. There were six skaters on each bench which struck a nice balance between generous ice time and adequate rest time. Marty wisely stayed home and rested his injury for another week, convinced that last week’s outing was premature. Kenny referred him to a colleague of his—an ear, nose, throat, and groin specialist who recommended anti-inflammatories and surgery for a deviated septum.
The other Kenny played goal for Red and Jamie played goal for Blue. Red jumped out to a 3-0 lead on two goals by Craig Allen and one by Tim White. Then Brian Urban (back on Blue’s offense again) scored twice, blasting both a slap shot and a wrist shot from the right-hand slot. Mike Dougherty fed Rich Cerbone for two successive goals, and then scored himself, putting Blue up 5-3. Larry Johnson made it 5-4. Then John Quirinale made one of his signature coast-to-coast drives, bobbled the backhand shot which skimmed behind the net, only to be corralled by Larry Johnson and outletted to Bill MacDowell, who buried the puck in the back of the net. The game was tied at fives.
Brian and Rich Devlin put Blue up by two, but Eddie and Huck Fairman countered, drawing Red even again. Jim Heffern then scored on a breakaway, giving Red a one goal lead. His play was notable for its complete lack of defense as he made a late-season push to repeat as “Hanger of the Year”. It was actually his fourth breakaway of the game but the first one he converted.
Rich Cerbone got number three on the night, and Brian scored again, giving Blue the 9-8 lead. Then Tim White tied it up at nines. With ten minutes to play Bill MacDowell, while crashing the net, settled a bouncing puck on the tape of his stick and lifted it over a prostrate, flailing Jamie for the game-winner. As time expired Jim Heffern scored on another breakaway making the final 11-9 Red.
Red had clinched the club title for 2010. For an hour afterward they celebrated on the ice, with beer and cigars. “What women!” Blue sniffed in disgust.
On this date (1974): Bill MacDowell takes his two sons to the new Quaker Bridge Mall to see the premiere of “Earthquake!” (in Sensurround). Afterward they head to the rink for Old Bucks Hockey, but their Gremlin blows a head gasket and breaks down by the side of the road. They get out and begin walking the remaining three miles toting equipment and sticks, while a keen, unremitting wind fights them the whole way. Many Old Bucksmen pass them but don’t give them a ride, as they think they’re a band of Irish travelers going from rink to rink looking for free hockey. Half-frozen, they reach the rink just as Old Bucks is ending. Bill proceeds to curse out the entire club—loudly. As Ned says, “It was like listening to him in Sensurround.”
